"You two were supposed to be home HALF AN HOUR AGO!" April stormed into the living room then, confronting the duo quickly.
Max slowly dropped his coat and book bag where they usually put them, next to the door.

"We're sorry!" May replied, looking up to her mother with big eyes. "Max tripped on the way home and we had to go slower and we don't have cell phones so we couldn't call..."

"Why were you two helping somebody find their kid, anyway?" April asked, still visibly very angry. "It's not your job! For all you know, that person could have been lying, and could have kidnapped you!"

April looked to Max.
"Why did you do that?! You could have gotten you or your sister hurt, you know that?! What if that perso-"
"Mom, they're not!"
"How do you know?"
"Because I've talked to the-"
"That doesn't mean ANYTHING, Max! Do they know where you live?"
"Yes."
"Do they know your name?!"
"Yes... but they're really ni-"
He was cut off by a stinging slap then.
"ANYBODY can be nice if they want to. Would you help a person asking you to help find their puppy? No! You wouldn't, because I RAISED YOU BOTH TO BE SMARTER THAN THAT. Finding a 'friend of yours' is NO. DIFFERENT. You understand me?!"

"Yes Ma'am."
"Good. Now go up to your room. Both of you."

"But you said I could watch a movie when I got home..." May whined, standing in place and looking at her feet with disappoint.

It would be perhaps an hour or so later that April would come bursting in, their bags in hand, and almost throw them at them, shouting about... something. It was really hard to say what she was freaking out about.

It would be perhaps an hour or so later that April would come bursting in, their bags in hand, and almost throw them at them, shouting about... something. It was really hard to say what she was freaking out about. "WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?!" The nine-year-old girl would shout back a moment later. "YOU'RE HARD TO UNDERSTAND WHEN YOU ARE!"

Then, May'd be given a heavy slap.
"DON'T TALK BACK TO ME!"
"Mom, stop!"
"YOU TOO!"

The nine year old shrunk back and rubbed where she was slapped. "S-sorry..." She replied, trying to hold back tears.

"SORRY DOESN'T CUT IT."
April left the room then. Max ran over to May, pulling her close before April came back with a long object.

May released her tears then, gripping on to her older brother tightly as she saw her mother return.
With a belt.
