Max looked up to her, shrinking back slightly once again, this time from the dog trying to jump the fence at him. He glanced, ever so briefly, at her black eye, concerned on the inside.
"N-no..." He replied, "I... I'm your neighbor... I live across the street? You... waved at me last night."

"Emelia." The woman replied. "Moved in the other week."

He smiled.
"So that's why I've never met you before... well, I mean, not that I, you know, know everybody or anything... I'm sorry." He glanced down at her hand, seeing a ring. "You're... married?"

"Uh... I... I'm sorry..." He backed away a few feet, looking down, shy and a bit embarrassed. "I... I... never really learned social cues, I guess?" He gave a half-hearted laugh, rubbing the back of his neck.

"It's fine." She yawned, watching her dog run back inside with a gruff. "Look, kid, I gotta go. Nice talking to you."
And with that, the woman walked back in after the greyhound.

Max walked back across the street, and was thus down for the rest of the day once he got home.

"Big brother, what's wrooooooooooong?" His younger sister asked, poking at his stomach while he laid on the couch. Both Evelyn and their mother were out doing somethingorother. They were rather vague about the details.

And stayed like that until, several hours later, there was a knock at the door.

May shot up from her spot and opened the door. "Hi!" She chirped to whoever was there.
