The heat and humidity of the day after a summer summer storm was unbearable. Especially if you were in Georgia. Especially if you were in a car with a now-broken air conditioner, taking a fourty-odd mile trip to visit family for the summer.
"It's hottttt..." A redhaired teenager groaned to her parents from the backseat, fanning herself with a magazine. "can't you just... go faster? I don't care if it's just ten more minutessss."
"May, you can wait." The girl's mother replied from the passenger's seat, herself using a fan. "It's normally much, much hotter around here, after all."
The girl gave another high pitched whine then.

Her brother was lucky enough to have called shotgun this time, his seat all the way back, and his pants legs rolled up. It was definitely hotter than it needed to be.
"Can't we just open up the windows?" He interjected. "I'm sure Grandma doesn't give a shit if your hair is going eight different ways, May, at least not when the other idea is to have a heatstroke..."

"Well, Max," The girl replied, tossing a glare at her brother from her seat. "I care if my hair looks like shit! It's not like we ever see her in the first place!"
"...Every time with these two..." Their mother sighed, resting her head on the dashboard.

"May, we're going to spend the whole summer with her. She'll have time to know how pretty you try to make yourself look every day." He blew a raspberry at her then.

Max suddenly had a bottle of water thrown into his face, and the car stopped dead in its tracks as it approached the gate.
"Finall-eeeeeee." The younger child sighed in happiness.

Max giggled, taking a swig and twisting the cap shut as he got out of the car, grabbing a few things from the car and leading his sister in through the gates.

The girl was effectively making a pack-mule out her older twin, only carrying her purse as she walked ahead and knocked on the door of their grandmother's home.
"Hurry up, Max!" She shouted behind her.

"Well excuse the fuck out of me for carrying your bags!"
May would be greeted by an older man, their grandmother's personal butler.
"Ah, you're finally here. Your grandmother was beginning to be very worried..."

The girl hadn't noticed the butler opening the door then, shouting back "You do it because you love your little sister, Max! Don't be an asshole!"
She then noticed the butler, hearing the man's statement, and putting on a smile.
"Hi Jacques. Sorry, there was traffic and car troubles. Should we come in?"

"Of course."
Jacques reached out to help Max with the bags, taking the lighter few inside. The bags were all placed on the ground close to the door, and a few other servants came to grab them.
"We heard you both had very good grades this year."

"Surprising as it is, yes." The girl nodded as she followed the butler inside. "I didn't fail math, he didn't fail... something."

"Gym." Max droned, almost on cue.
"Ah, well, that calls for a celebration! Are your parents coming in?"

"I think they ar--" May's voice was overriden by the sound of burning rubber in the distance. The girl's smile disappeared then. "...aren't."

"...Oh, well..." Jacques gave a small, uncomfortable laugh. "Anyways, if you'll come into the parlor, I'm sure your grandmother will be happy to see you two."

"Thank you, Jacques." The redhaired fifteen year old trailed off then, going to find her grandmother.

Max gave the older man a smile, running off after his sister.
The duo would find their grandmother in the coldest room in the house, resting on one of the large, lounging sofas, candles and various foods set out on the coffee table in front of her. Her hair was up as usual, into a tight bun, and her dress was massive, enveloping her and half the couch. She looked up as the twins walked in, and smiled.
"Ah, there's my darling."

The redhaired girl, dressed in a simple out fit of a black blouse and skirt with her hair down to her shoulders, smiled again. She began running up to the couch with cheer. She hugged the old woman then.
"Hi, Grandma."

Florence smiled, hugging her and her grandson back.
"Sit down, sit down, help yourself to some snacks! What have you two been up to?"

"Oh nothing, really!" May replied, sitting next to Florence. "Max was being a jerk to me on the way here, like normal, but nothing else."

"Was not!"
"Now you two, don't start fighting..."
"Yes, Grandma."
