It was an incredibly hot summer day as the decade old Crosser twins sat on the steps to the front porch of their Aunt June's home in boredom. The third boyfriend of the summer was sick and refused to leave, meaning their aunt wasn't going to take them out to the city this week.
"It's hoooooooooooooooooooot..." The older twin, a girl named May, cried as she held her head in her hands.

"I know May..." Her brother sighed, knees pulled up to his chest, resting his head on his arms. "It doesn't help that that stupid AC quit, so not even the inside of the house is cooler..."

"And boring!" May added to her complaints. "And Aunt June won't let us inside for some reason!!"

Max looked to May.
"...Do you think they're...?"

Max looked to May. "...Do you think they're...?" "...No?" May replied with an innocence in tone, unaware of what her brother was talking about.

Max shuddered, and then stood up.
"Well, there's got to be SOMETHING to do around here!" He reached his hand out to her. "Wanna get our bathing suits out of the car, and go see if there's a place anywhere nearby that has a swimming pool?"

"...But I can't swim!" May replied, shooting up. "...but let's do it anyway!"

"...I can't either!" He agreed happily. "But anything's better than here!"

May walked to the car then, trying to open the front door to unlock the trunk. With multiple exaggerated pulls, the girl gave a groan of defeat before dropping to the floor.
"...She locked it!"

"...Wanna go explore, uh..." He looked around. "...The shed?"

"Where her last boyfriend kept his tools? Sure!" The girl chirped, getting up from the ground in seconds and following her brother.

And so the two ran to the shed, opening it and going inside...

"...I found a kitty!" The girl said, holding up a formerly sleeping kitten that managed to get inside above her head.

"U-uh........M-M-May? That... that isn't a kitty..."
In her arms, May was now holding a skunk.

"...it isn't?" She replied, dropping the skunk to the ground. The skunk shot off its fume before running out of the shed.
"..." May then began crying as she ran back to her aunt's.

"...ohgod..."
And so the two ran back together.

They'd find their aunt wouldn't come to the door.
Being extremely busy.
With her boyfriend.

May eventually dropped down on her side and balled up, still sobbing.

Max sighed, reluctantly putting a hand on her shoulder.
"Well, uh... we need to do SOMETHING... let's..." He looked around, and saw a plot of trees nearby. "...Let's go and see if there's like... a lake out there. Maybe that'll help!"
